Biden to meet Brazilian president ahead of G20 summit – EADaily, October 19, 2024 – Politics News, US News

US President Joe Biden will meet Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ahead of the G20 summit, Reuters reports, citing sources.

According to the agency, negotiations between both leaders will take place on November 16 or 17. The US administration has begun preparations for Biden’s visit to Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, he intends to visit the Amazon rainforest.

The meeting will replace the official visit of the US president to Brazil, which the countries’ leaders agreed to during Lula da Silva’s visit to the White House in 2023, Reuters notes.

Brazil holds the presidency of the G20 from December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024. On November 18 and 19, it will host the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, and other events will take place in 15 cities in five states of the country.

Lula da Silva said he would invite the Russian president Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit. On October 18, Putin said his arrival could interfere with the summit and create problems for the Brazilian president.

According to Putin, even if we exclude the risks posed by the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant, “everything that will be talked about will be just about this,” and everyone knows it.

Brazil has ratified the Rome Statute, which provides for arrest by the ICC. Last March, a court in The Hague issued arrest warrants for Putin and the children’s ombudsman. Maria Lvova-Belovawhom the ICC suspects of “illegal deportation of the population (children)” from Ukraine to Russia, RBC recalls.
