Another terrifying illness predicted in children who recovered from coronavirus

The risk of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents ages 10 to 19 who have had COVID-19 remains high for six months after infection.

Oku.AzAccording to information provided by , this was known from a new study carried out by scientists from the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (USA). A study of his research was published in the prestigious scientific journal JAMA Network Open.

It was reported that more than 600,000 teenage volunteers participated in the large-scale study. They were divided into two equal groups: the first group included patients with COVID-19 and the second group included patients with other respiratory diseases (CKD). The researchers also separately analyzed data from a subgroup of participants with obesity.

The results showed that the risk of type 2 diabetes after COVID-19 was significantly higher than after other CVDs. Additionally, overweight children and adolescents are more likely to develop serious illnesses. The health risk remained six months after coronavirus infection.

It was noted that the exact biological mechanisms linking COVID-19 and diabetes have not yet been identified.

Scientists believe that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can alter the functioning of the systems responsible for insulin production in the pancreas or the processes that regulate its distribution to the body’s cells. However, more studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.
