In Spain, it is estimated that there are more than nine million dogs, a number that has increased significantly in recent years. Although many consider these animals part of their family, not everyone shares the same perception. In some cases, dogs can be a nuisance, particularly in public spaces such as beaches, where their presence generates tension.
This is precisely what was reported a resident of San Sebastian in a letter published by ‘El Diario Vasco’, of the Vocento group. The author of the letter, José Luis Cantero, explains that uncontrolled dogs have “caused more than one accident” on the city’s beaches and emphasizes the need to respect heritage.
In his story, Cantero describes how owners often become distracted when animals behave inappropriately. In addition, he mentions situations in which they leave their excrement without anyone picking it up, which, according to him, affects all beach users.
“Some people urinate on your clothes”
Cantero also exposes some personal episodes in which he was affected by the carefree attitude of the owners. “Dogs come ‘play’ with you and fill you with drool,” he writes, recounting how he had to deal with situations in which the animals caused him physical discomfort. “Dogs who urinate on your clothes” or those who, while playing, “take your sock and make it torn and drooling,” are examples he cites to illustrate the lack of control over pets.
Additionally, the author recalls a recent case in which a dog bit a person, which highlights the danger that lack of supervision on the part of owners can pose. For him, these problems can be avoided if greater courtesy is encouraged. “This wouldn’t happen if all dogs were tethered,” he concludes, proposing greater responsibility in pet management.
