Meloni’s shameful experience with migrants in Albanian centers does not even meet minimum prison standards

The immigration model proposed by the Italian Prime Minister, the far-right Giorgia Meloni, has attracted many member countries of the European Union and the President of the European Commission herself, Ursula Von der Leyen. The plan, however, He has suffered a legal setback since the courts overthrew him and demanded the return of the migrants he expelled to Albania: but this is not a setback for Meloni, but confirmation of the violation of human rights what its migratory model implies.

laSexta Noticias spoke with several human rights experts and all agree that it is serious that this migratory model is implemented, as well as the normalization of the centers of “shame” where Meloni wants to detain migrants. Juan Matías Gil, head of search and rescue operations Doctors Without Bordersspeaks of a “violation” of rights by “arbitrary and prolonged detention”.

“The right to life, to physical integrity, the right to the family, family reunification which is not guaranteed as the protocol is developed, the right to liberty and, therefore, the violation in arbitrary and prolonged detention”, emphasizes Gil. Meanwhile, the 12 asylum seekers have two weeks to appeal of the rejection of their asylum requests for which Italy is responsible issued in record time.

In the same spirit, Karlos Castilla Juárez, professor of human rights at Pompeu Fabra University, spoke, emphasizing that “We do not know the conditions under which these people are transferred“That is to say the conditions of the boat, how many hours, how long, if they receive food, how this transfer takes place”, explains Castilla Juárez.

More expensive and worse than a prison

The Italian judges, by canceling the attempt to expel the 12 asylum seekers to Albania, understand, following European decisions, that this group of migrants come from countries that are not considered safe. They didn’t even have to comment on the centers built in Albania which not only have an appearance, but are prisons.

“Although they are called detention centers or detention centers, all the features resemble those of a prison”, adds the professor, recalling that there is a “disadvantage that by calling them otherwise they do not apply not even minimum prison standards“. The European Council closely followed the shameful Italian experience with asylum seekers.

Gil explains that “an operation to bring 12 or 16 one person costs around 300,000 euros, while the approximate daily cost of people who are in Albania is around 400-500 euros, while in Italy it would be 35 euros. This is obviously nonsense which has no other explanation. “only propaganda”, adds the head of search and rescue operations at Doctors Without Borders.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, almost crossed her fingers that everything would work out in her favor, because this is the model we want to install in Europe. “What this shows is really trying to put human rights violations out of Europe’s sight“, says Castilla Juárez. Meanwhile, Gil maintains that “we must promote agreements with countries of origin so that people can arrive safely.”
