Thousands of people demonstrate in Valencia for the right to housing and against touristification

Thousands of people traveled in the streets of central Valencia to demand the right to housing and also to demonstrate against the touristification of the city. All under the motto “Valencia s’ofega”, in memory of the flood that inundated the city on October 14, 1957.

Four columns of demonstrators left from different districts of the city, to converge at 6:30 p.m. at Torres de Seranos.

Among the organizers are the Consell de la Joventut, CCOO PV, the PSPV-PSOE, Compromís, Sumar or Acció Cultural del País Valencià, as well as the neighborhood and cultural associations of the Valencian capital, which demand the regulation of rental prices, stopping evictions, creating an official park of protected housing and the cessation of sales of housing to foreign capital.

In reference to the excess of tourists, it is requested that it be declared Valencia as a stressed area, that tourist apartments be prohibited and that hotel activity be “strictly” regulated. Likewise, they consider that “we must stop betting on tourism as an economic engine, put an end to the promotion of the city as a tourist destination and stop the entry of cruise ships and the expansion of the port and airport “.

Participants in the demonstration displayed banners with the slogans “Housing is a right”, “València is not for sale”. or “the bench to the bench” and at the beginning of the march, they rang the keys of their houses.
