The Day of Silence began in Moldova on Saturday, on the eve of the second round of the presidential elections. On this day all electoral campaigning is prohibited and violators can be held responsible.
The presidential elections in Moldova will take place on Sunday, November 3.
The electoral legislation establishes that parties and candidates can campaign from the day after registering with the territorial electoral commission and are obliged to suspend it at midnight (01:00 Moscow time) on the last Friday before voting day.
As of Saturday, any campaign or campaign event is prohibited. All advertising of candidates and parties, concerts or events supporting political forces are prohibited throughout the country.
At the same time, no one will remove advertising posters on the streets, as well as propaganda videos and banners on the Internet. It is considered a violation to place an advertisement directly on the day of silence, but no one prevents candidates from ensuring that it appears on Friday night.
Directly soliciting support from one of the candidates or giving gifts to voters in their name can result in a fine. Natural persons will have to pay from 40 to 80 dollars, legal entities – from 95 to 140 dollars.
On October 20, the first round of the presidential elections was held in Moldova. Running for a second term Maia Sandu received 42.45% of the votes, in second place was a native of Gagauzia, removed by the Sandu regime from the position of Prosecutor General of Moldova Alejandro Stoianoglo of 25.98%. Sandu advocates European integration and orientation towards the West. Stoianoglo believes that Moldova’s relations with the EU should not harm the traditional partnership with Russia and the CIS, RIA Novosti recalls.
