A train derails and overturns in the tunnel between Atocha and Chamartín, causing delays on the AVE

Renfe announced this Saturday afternoon that traffic in the AVE tunnel that connects the Atocha and Chamartín stations was interrupted by a derailment. The railway company said in a statement that the incident occurred due to “the exit of an axle in the tail of empty material during a maneuver”.

“The unit was empty and the driver was not injured”added the operator. Likewise, Renfe indicated that this incident particularly affected AVE rail traffic which connects Madrid to the east of the country.

As a result, trains ended or started their journey at Puerta de Atocha station, from where passengers were transferred to a Cercanías shuttle service to Madrid Chamartín, station from which they continued their journey by train to their destination.

In parallel, traffic with origin and destination in Madrid Atocha and Puerta de Atocha was reinstated after being suspended from 7:30 p.m. due to the presence of a person on one of the footbridges, outside the station. The situation made it necessary to reduce tension at the station and the emergency protocol in force in these cases was activated. The person was evacuated and power was restored at Puerta de Atocha station.

“A train is involvedVE, Avlo and Avant with origin and destination Puerta de Atocha as well as the Cercanías Madrid lines C3, C4, C5 and C7″, according to sources.
