On Saturday afternoon, the axle came loose from the tail of an empty train during a maneuver inside the tunnel that connects the Puerta de Atocha and Chamartín High Speed stations. After the derailment of this train, delays occurred which caused a crowd of travelers at the station, to which was added the presence of a man who entered an unauthorized access area and threatened to jump off a podium.
This led to the emergency protocol being activated and a complete power outage at the station at 7:30 p.m., until this person was rescued at 9:20 p.m. and power was restored to the railway before the gradual resumption of rail traffic.
At the entrance to Atocha, an Alvia Alicante-Gijón, an Avant Toledo-Madrid, an Avant Madrid-Puertollano, an AVE Figueres-Madrid and an AVE Madrid-Seville were stopped, in addition to the suspension of service in the previous stations for several medium distance trains and Cercanías.
