Podemos founder Pablo Iglesias said on Sunday that his current goal is to “accumulate power”, to “bend the arm” of President Pedro Sánchez, as Junts did by demanding the amnesty law in exchange of his support for the inauguration
“I want to accumulate power“, because only by having power can we achieve what Junts achieved with the amnesty”, indicated Iglesias during the closing of the Autumn University that Podemos organized this weekend at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid.
“Politics is not just about principles, it is about amassing enough power to make the principles a reality,” he explained. And for the moment, the four Podemos deputies in Congress have “enough strength to bend Pedro Sánchez’s arm“like Junts did,” he added.
During a discussion moderated by the Canal Rouge journalist Laura ArroyoPablo Iglesias reiterated the order launched on Saturday by the secretary general of Podemos, Ione Belarra: the four deputies of the purple formation will withdraw their support for the government, if Pedro Sánchez does not break diplomatic relations with Israel and agrees to regulate by law the price of rent.
If the rest of the left-wing parties in Congress “want to build unity, they should join the four Podemos deputies” to achieve this dual objective, he said.
Pablo Iglesias thus confirmed that his objective is to take advantage of the weakness of Pedro Sánchez’s government, plagued by scandals and with a declining parliamentary majority, to increase the price of Podemos’ support for the 2025 state budget.
