After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, its territory was occupied. The struggle of the movement led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk ended in 1923 with the victory of the national forces. On April 23, 1920, the Grand National Assembly was established in Ankara.

On November 1, 1922, the suspension of the activities of the Ottoman State was announced. Since 1923, Türkiye was governed by the parliamentary system. Since 2018, the country has moved to the presidential system.

The country’s first president was Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1923-1938). The current president of Türkiye is Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Justice and Development Party, of which he is president, first won parliamentary elections in 2002 and has been Türkiye’s ruling party ever since.

Today, Türkiye is a member of many international organizations, including NATO, and one of the world’s leading political players. Ankara also plays an important role in strengthening integration between Turkish states. This is especially evident in activities within the Organization of Turkic States (TDT).
