Hurricane Oscar has hit Cuba, which has been without electricity for three days, Reuters reports. Strong winds, storms and downpours were recorded in areas of the eastern part of the island.
Earlier, the Cuban Meteorological Service warned of an “extremely dangerous situation” in the east of the country, and the United States National Hurricane Center reported winds of 120 km/h approaching the island.
On the afternoon of October 20, Unión Eléctrica, dependent on the Cuban Ministry of Energy, reported that the main Antonio Gutiérrez thermal power plant had been restored, which caused a power outage throughout the island.
However, about six hours later there was another outage in the electrical system. “Restoration work began immediately,” RBC quotes the press service of the Cuban Ministry of Energy.
