Meteorologists warn of explosive cyclogenesis in these regions of Spain

After the interval of cold and rainy weather that accompanied Storm Leslie, the the anticyclone will gain ground and will leave stable weather and temperatures increasing this Sunday, according to the forecast of the spokesperson for the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET), Rubén del Campo. However, it will continue to rain in some areas of the northern half, notably in Galicia, due to fronts linked to a powerful storm in the North Atlantic which the Irish Weather Service has named Ashley.

“This major storm could have a direct impact on the western coasts of Ireland and Great Britain, with hurricane force winds, intense rain and large waves,” he explains. Duncan Wingenexpert of Weatherized. In addition, it will undergo a process of explosive cyclogenesis. Between Saturday and Sunday morning, “the center of the storm could go from a minimum pressure of 995 hPa to only 960 hPa,” continues the specialist. “Due to the rapid decrease in pressure, these storms are also called “bombogenesis” or “weather bombs‘”.

“This powerful extratropical cyclone will not reach Spain, but we will notice its indirect effects,” he continues. “Some waves can exceed 8 meters off Galicia, and the southwest wind driven by the storm will leave gusts of more than 70-80 km/h northwest of the peninsula“.

Next week will start similar to Sunday, with mostly slightly cloudy skies. The exception will be in parts of the Cantabrian Sea and in Galicia, where it will rain. Additionally, the thermometer values will increase a little more. The Aemet spokesperson indicated that the sky would be cloudier Tuesday due to the passage of a front and it will rain in the far north.

This same Monday, the instability in the Mediterranean peninsular area and in parts of the Balearic Islands there will already be showers. Temperatures will drop, although they will generally remain typical for this time of year.

The Mediterranean area and the Balearic Islands are expected to experience increased instability between Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be more clouds and more rain, which could be intense in the southern area of the Valencian Community. At the same time, precipitation could also be recorded in the northern third due to the passage of fronts associated with the Atlantic storm. However, temperatures will not experience major changes.

“Another effect of this explosive cyclogenesis is that will drive the anticyclonic ridge towards the south of the European continent (including Spain) and will promote the release of a DANA in North Africa,” adds Wingen. “Depressions, when encountering an anticyclone, tend to surround it on its left bank, frequently affecting the European Atlantic coast.”

In the Canary Islands, the Aemet spokesperson specified that this weekend there would be a trade wind regime on the islandswhich will vary from moderate to strong and will drive clouds north of the more mountainous islands. Even if some drizzle cannot be ruled out in this area, the forecast predicts clearer skies in the south of the archipelago. Temperatures, although they will increase, will drop again on Monday. Over the next week, the trade wind regime will continue with the same type of weather and mild temperatures.
