Mercedes boss asks EU not to impose tariffs on Chinese electric cars

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius called on the European Union (EU) not to impose import duties on Chinese electric vehicles. This is reported by TASS citing the newspaper Bild.

“We need to be competitive internationally. Then the transformation can be successful and the economy will grow in the long term. “New tariffs won’t help us.” – said.

Källenius added that what is needed is not new barriers, but free trade.

“For this reason, it is important to find a solution that is fair for both the EU and China.” Mercedes-Benz further said.

According to him, negotiations on this issue have been taking time.

“To avoid putting them at risk, the EU should delay the introduction of the planned tariffs,” – Kallenius concluded.

On October 4, the EU increased tariffs on Chinese electric cars, setting the maximum rate at 35%. China considered this an act of protectionism and announced retaliatory measures against European products. Notably, on October 8, the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China announced an anti-dumping investigation into agricultural products from the European Union. Beijing is also considering raising tariffs on cars with large engines from the association’s member countries.
