In the last hours, Gran Canaria has welcomed the largest cayuco in its history, since 231 people of sub-Saharan origin arrived on the island, including 58 minors and 13 women, as reported by EFE on 1-1- 2.
Upon their arrival on land, by their own means, these people benefited from humanitarian and health assistance and three of them were evacuated to hospital centers to present minor pathologies linked to their sea crossing from Africa.
According to the Red Cross, this is the largest cayuco ever recorded in Gran Canaria, but not in the Canary Islands, since last year there were more than 250 occupants in El Hierro and even one with 330.
After being alerted that a boat with immigrants was sailing near the coast, more precisely 5.5 kilometers from Arguineguín, a rescue boat, the Salvamar Macondo, left this Sunday afternoon to help them, although the cayuco was able to land without assistance.
