According to the US proposal, control of the border area would be exercised by the Lebanese army and Hezbollah terrorists would be removed from the area. However, Israel insisted that if terrorists reappeared on its borders, it must be able to intervene directly.
A meeting between American envoys Amos Hochstein and Brett McGurk took place in Jerusalem on Thursday, October 31. A source close to the American side said that negotiations with Israeli representatives yielded more positive results than expected.
Another senior official said the discussions were “substantive” and “constructive.” In Lebanon, sources said Israeli demands are considered “unrealistic” and could undermine the country’s sovereignty. A politician linked to the terrorist group Hezbollah said that after the recent Hochstein attempt, “everything is over,” suggesting that further events will unfold only on the battlefield.
