Azerbaijan elections in the IPA CIS were considered democratic

The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were held in accordance with democratic principles, said Andrey Yatskin, coordinator of observers for the CIS API.

“The main conclusion of the IPA CIS is that, based on the monitoring, we came to the conclusion that the parliamentary elections held for the first time throughout Azerbaijan respected democratic principles, electoral legislation and the Constitution of the country.” – said the coordinator.

The CIS IPA elections were monitored by 40 observers from six Commonwealth countries. Representatives of the organisation monitored the elections at 145 polling stations.

First Deputy Secretary General of the IEC Leonid Anfimov At a press conference of a group of international observers of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, he also stated that the observation mission was carried out in accordance with the documents in force in the Commonwealth on the norms of democratic elections, respect for electoral rights and freedoms of citizens, the principles of non-interference in electoral processes and internal affairs of the state, based on generally accepted principles and norms of international law in the field of organization of elections.

“We would like to highlight the open work of the Central Election Commission of the country. According to the mission, the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan took the necessary measures to conduct the election campaign on time in accordance with the requirements of the law.” – said Leonid Anfimov.

By-elections to the Milli Majlis were held on 1 September. 990 candidates competed for 125 seats in parliament. In total, 20 parties announced their participation in the elections.

There are 6.42 million registered voters in the republic. Nearly 6.5 thousand polling stations have been opened in Azerbaijan, including 54 in Karabakh.
