The “back to school” is hot in Castile-La Mancha with the announcement of a teachers’ strike

The STE-CLM, CSIF and CCOO unions have called a Castilla-La Mancha teachers strike in all provinces of the region for September 11 at 11:30 a.m., at the start of the 2024/2025 school year.

As stated in a press release, the concentration in Albacete will take place at the Pincho de la Feria, while in Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo it will be in front of the doors of the Education Delegation.

As they explain, this concentration, “which has the support of the majority of teachers according to the survey promoted by the unions in which a total of 3,000 teachers participated, aims to make visible the problems faced by teachers in Castilla-La Mancha… and achieve quality public education,” according to the union organizations.

Among the main demands of the union representatives, who represent 60% of the teaching staff, are the reduction of the bureaucratic burden in educational centers and the high number of students per class: “The current ratio of students makes it impossible for us to serve them adequately, which is why we are asking for this amount to be reduced,” they say.

Faced with this situation in the classrooms, STE-CLM, CCOO and CSIF require that a maximum of 15 students be enrolled in Early Childhood; 20 in the Primary, Secondary and Vocational Training (FP) cycles; 25 in the Baccalaureate; and 12 in basic FP.

For their part, the unions are demanding the possibility of summer payment for temporary staff, with a minimum service period of 5 and a half months, and a reduction in the teaching load for teachers over 55 years old.

In addition to these proposals, the unions are demanding a reduction in teaching hours to 18 hours for secondary education and to 23 hours for teaching staff. They are also demanding an increase in the hours allocated to complementary activities and a review of staff and resource cuts.

In this context, the STE-CLM, the CCOO and the CSIF insist on the need to open collective negotiations on the working conditions of teachers within the sectoral negotiation table of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.

The unions, however, stress that these measures must be implemented before the end of the legislature, without requiring their immediate application, thus allowing them to be included in the corresponding budget items.

The convening unions will broadcast an online assembly open to public next Wednesday, September 4, at 6:00 p.m.During the session, the reasons for the strike will be detailed and space will be offered to resolve doubts and answer questions from participants.

The meeting will be available on the Zoom platform via the following link and also on YouTube via the following link:
