The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchezannounced a series of measures after chairing a meeting in La Moncloa of the crisis committee created to respond to the disaster of DANA which has affected Valencia and other regions of Spain in recent days and which has cost the lives of more than 200 people, and after speaking with the President of the Valencian Generalitat, Carlos Mazón.

These are, one by one, the measures announced by Sánchez to face what he described as “the greatest natural disaster in the recent history of our country”:

Military and security forces

  • Deployment in the province of Valencia of 5,000 additional soldiers, of which 4,000 will be present this Saturday and the other 1,000 tomorrow, Sunday.

  • Deployment of an amphibious ship to provide accommodation, operating rooms, helicopters and a support fleet which will arrive in Valencia “in the coming hours”.

  • Deployment of 5,000 police officers and civil guards, adding a total of 10,000 to those already deployed so far.

Recovery and identification of bodies

  • Deployment of 20 corpse removal teams, which include forensic experts, psychologists and members of the Scientific Police.

  • Mobile morgues

  • An identification unit for victims of natural disasters of the National Police

Restoration of basic supplies

  • Provision of portable devices to ensure Wi-Fi connection and telephone coverage.

  • Travel of 300 specialists from the General Directorate of Roads to reactivate transport infrastructure.

  • Start of repair works on the Chiva and Torrent railway tunnels, which connect Madrid to Valencia, and the Cercanías C1 and C2 lines, which are expected to be completed this weekend, after the restoration of high speed between Barcelona and Valencia and traffic of goods with Aragon and Catalonia.

  • Sending 300 forestry brigades to clean the most affected canals and banks, as well as to help technicians from the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation repair damaged hydraulic infrastructure.

  • Lifting restrictions on driving and rest times of transporters for the arrival and distribution of food.

  • Strengthening logistics lines with the Army for the distribution of thousands of liters of water and food rations.

  • Provision of five wastewater treatment plants, water tanks and 200 portable latrines to the Valencian Generalitat.

  • Distribution of 4,000 tool, kitchen and hygiene kits.
