The reasons that led La Liga to decide not to suspend all Matchday 12 matches due to the DANA tragedy

Cholo Simeone and José Bordalás are the latest coaches to protest against the decision of Spanish football leaders not to suspend league matches. On Friday, after the match between Alavés and Mallorca, Luis García Plaza and Jagoba Arrasate admitted during a press conference the unanimous feeling of the teams that make up Spanish football: “this match should not have been played.”

“Those who decide to play will have to give their reasons. I think it’s difficult to go to a football stadium to applaud, sing a goal or express feelings of joy when a few kilometers away there are people having a bad time. From the patrol they assure that the decision not to suspend the competition is not due to the saturation of the championship, but rather to the difficulty of completely stopping an industry as large as football, in the same way as the great majority of the country’s industries have not stopped either.

“At the end of the day, it shows you that we are a commodity in the world of sport. When moments like this come and we can give a lesson in humanity, we don’t give it. That’s the world in which we live, we can decide if we live it or enter another reality, which I think is more human”, admitted Vicente Iborra, annoyed.

LaLiga defends that with the decision not to suspend the matches, a significant amount of money will be collected that will go to those affected by DANA, that is, the money collected during the First and Second Division matches will go to people affected by the weather phenomenon.

LaLiga is leading a campaign in collaboration with the Red Cross to mitigate the damage caused by DANA in the Valencian Community. In addition, the institution chaired by Javier Tebas will help rebuild the affected football fields.
