Canary Islands receive 200 new undocumented migrants per day at the end of summer and Ceuta already triples the crisis of 2023

The document, updated on August 31, said the cumulative number of land entries into the autonomous North African city in 2023 at this point in the summer was 650 people. During the same period of the 2024 financial year, Ceuta was overwhelmed by a total of 1,917 immigrant arrivals.

The seriousness of the “humanitarian emergency” led this Monday to Fernando ClavijoPresident of the Canary Islands, to propose in his Government Council to take the Executive of Pedro Sanchez before the courts “for abandonment of functions”. His continuous calls for help led the president to receive him in La Palma, 10 days ago, at the end of his holidays in Lanzarote. But the crisis has only worsened.

Among them, more than 25,500 migrants undocumented arrived on the shores of the islands, more than 5,300 are minors unaccompanied persons (menas), whose care is the responsibility of the Autonomous Community. For this reason, and given the “overcrowding” of the centres (which increased from 33 to 81 last year), last July a political crisis broke out.

The government of the Canary Islands, in collaboration with the government of Ceuta, managed to get the Spanish government to agree to hold a meeting of the sectoral conference so that the rest of the autonomous communities would accept a new distribution of these miners. In the end, all the regions voted in favor, except Catalonia (still governed by the ERC), which abstained.

However, the references to the Peninsula were very uninspiring: 347 minors from the Canary Islands and 87 from Ceuta They would be transferred to the rest of the autonomies.

No other distributions have been accepted by the LACC before the government’s refusal to provide further fundingdespite the fact that the reception centres were already saturated. The reception areas are at more than 140% of their capacity, in centres intended to protect Spanish minors abandoned by their families, and not foreigners who, in addition to housing, schooling and tutoring, must learn Spanish.

The Popular Party regions accepted the distribution, despite threats from the Popular Party leaders. Vox to break government coalitions in six of these LACCs. Finally, the far-right party carried out its threat in Castile and Leon, Extremadura, the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia, the Balearic Islands and Aragon.
