Trading on the Spanish stock exchange did not increase in August compared to last year despite high volatility

Stock trading usually declines during the summer months, with less investor activity during the hottest months of the year. This August, marked by high market volatility after the major declines in the main indices, was no exception and is the month with the lowest trading on the Spanish stock market so far this year. In fact, this market was trading 19.190 million euros, 0.4% less than the same month last yearwhen securities trading amounted to 19.272 million euros, according to BME data.

As progress has been made, stock market trading has not increased despite the fact that volatility (which is measured by the Vix index, commonly known as the fear index) has climbed to levels not seen since the health pandemic. All this happened after experiencing the latest references of the American labor market, in which poor unemployment data triggered fears of recession in the largest economy on the planet. In the first week of August, the main European references corrected by more than 2%.

On the other hand, May was the month with the highest trading on the Spanish stock exchange, with 35.125 million euros. The IGBM index recorded gains of 4.5% in May, the second most bullish month of the year after March, when it rose by more than 11%.

April is the second month of the year with the most trading, with 33.156 million, followed by March, with 29.466 million. On the other side of the table, after August, the next month with the lowest stock trading in the Spanish market was January, with 23.475 million, which is 22% more than the trading recorded last month.

It is worth remembering that Spanish stock trading has been falling steadily in recent years. In fact, in 2023, hiring was the lowest since 2004, as reported by the CNMV, with 630.529 million. Thus, the Spanish market It has now been eight years – since 2016 – of declining negotiations..
