Oceanologists have discovered a mysterious object in the depths off the coast of Alaska. For a whole year, scientists have been unable to understand its origin, Sciencealert reported.
The object was found in 2023 during an expedition organized by the ocean research division of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A deep-sea robot discovered a ball with a diameter of about 10 cm at a depth of 3.3 thousand m. The object was firmly attached to the rock, and scientists noticed a hole on one of its sides.
Some scientists have suggested that the ball could be a dead sponge or coral remains. According to another hypothesis, the find could be the egg of an unknown marine creature, suggesting the presence of a very large animal in the ocean.
“If it is an egg, then the really interesting question is whose egg it is. It is quite large. These are not small fish eggs. This is significant.” — cites the opinion of Sciencealert researchers.
At the same time, as noted in the publication, the expeditionaries were puzzled by the fact that no other similar balls were found in the vicinity, which is not typical for the eggs of sea creatures. The ball was brought to the surface for further research, but its exact origin has not yet been determined.
“Although we were able to collect the golden ball and bring it back to the ship, we have not yet been able to determine what it is, other than the fact that it is of biological origin.” – said the leader of the expedition Sam Candio.
