Relive the new chapter of A BOARD: Innovation in Chile, risk or stagnation

What actions should the country take to become a developed nation? One of the short term answers is the i responseInvestment in an innovation strategy to diversify its production sources and services, which for decades have focused on the extraction of non-renewable resources.

Public-private strategies such as Lithium and green hydrogen are beautiful roadmaps that mark this path, because for their commercialization they require a series of new technologies that could be born on national lands.

However, if we speak at the micro level, in the private sector, in companies, the situation is different: The results of the latest Business Innovation Profile, published last May, show that Chile occupies 7th place out of 9 in the ranking. Moreover, our investments in research and development are still less than 0.5 percent… Why has this stagnation occurred?

Why is it necessary to invest in science? Why should this investment come from the state? What are the future benefits of investing today?

These and other questions were part of an interesting conversation between Polo Ramírez and Carolina Torrealba, vice-rector of research and doctorate at the Andrés Bello University and former undersecretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation.
