Von der Leyen demanded that women be promoted to leadership positions

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is demanding that some countries appoint women as European Commissioners in order to respect gender equality.

Oku.azThis was reported by the newspaper “Politico”.

European officials told the publication that the European Commission (EC) president is “increasing the pressure” on EU countries on the issue of gender equality. Three EU diplomats said von der Leyen had asked at least five countries, including Malta and Slovenia, to nominate women.

The publication added that other sources say that European countries are not responding to the calls of the European Commissioner and are challenging his authority. According to one of the diplomats, Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela ignored von der Leyen’s request and refused to replace the already chosen candidate with a woman.

The publication explains that if gender equality cannot be achieved in the new composition of the European Commission, the EC President will not be able to achieve the goal he declared a few months ago.
