“On December 22, 1974, the people of Gamar were called to vote in a referendum on whether they wanted to be independent or not. 74 percent of the people voted in favor of independence. Based on these results, the local territorial administration assembly declared the independence of the people of Gamar.”
Oku.Az This was stated by the former ambassador of the Union of the Gamar Islands to the UN, Mohamed Tohiri, at the international conference dedicated to the French-occupied island of Mayotte, organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
According to him, the Qamar people faced French colonial policy after declaring their independence:
“Although France has been aggressive towards us and we have been assimilated since 2010, we have not abandoned the path of independence. The voice of the Gamar people is still heard internationally. Let us initiate criminal proceedings against France at the International Criminal Court and support the struggle of the Gamar people internationally until the end.”
