How traditional cabañuelas work
THE RAE defines cabañuelas as a “popular calculation based on the observation of atmospheric changes during the first 12, 18 or 24 days of January or August, for forecast the weather during each month of the same year or the following year.
This is not a scientific method but a traditional folk method that they used thousands of years ago. It was a system widely used in the rural world and especially among the farmers. Currently, some elderly people continue to use it.
There are different formulas to calculate them. One of them is to observe and record the climate of these first 24 days of August and each of them is extrapolated to each fortnight of the following twelve months. That is to say, the time of August 1st corresponds to the first fortnight of January of the following year and the 2nd to the second. And so on.
The cabañuelas have value from a cultural point of viewbut they have no scientific value.
