Isabel Perelló, first woman to preside over the CGPJ and the Supreme Court as a consensus candidate

Commitment to the extremebut a pact in the end. The General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has elected Isabelle Perello as the new president, who will also be president of the Supreme Court. For the first time in history, both positions are held by a woman.

This Tuesday, the CGPJ agreed to propose it as well as the judge of the Supreme Court. Ana Ferrer as candidates; both of a progressive nature. In the end, Perelló was chosen, a profile that generated more consensus between the two blocs of the Council than her rival.

After a four-hour meeting held on Monday, the CGPJ plenary agreed to meet again this Tuesday, starting at ten o’clock in the morning, and agreed to broaden the range of candidates. After eleven o’clock, the names of these two magistrates were announced.

And finally, the two blocs of the ruling body of judges —the progressive wing and the sector considered conservative— managed to reach a consensus around Perello.

Born in 1958, She has been a Supreme Court justice since 2009.He began his judicial career in 1985 and has held positions at the Court of First Instance and Investigation of Mahón (Menorca), the Provincial Court of Barcelona and the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia.

She is a specialist in contentious and administrative jurisdictions and was a lawyer at the Constitutional Court between 1993 and 2003.

Now, she will be the one to give a speech this Thursday, as a representative of the judicial career, at the opening ceremony of the Judicial Year, which will be presided over by King Felipe VI. Thus, the two blocs of the CGPJ have intensified their efforts to avoid arriving tomorrow with an interim presidency of the governing body of judges.

Unlike his rival, Perelló’s name has been added to the list of candidates in recent hours.

Ferrer’s man was not new to the negotiations. Until now, he was the main bet of the progressive sector in recent weeks, after that of the magistrate who had lost weight Pilar Teso.

The deputies proposed by the PSOE had already proposed Ferrer’s profile to the conservatives, who rejected it, which gave Perelló a certain advantage over his rivalby building greater consensus, which resulted in his election as president of the CGPJ and the Supreme Court.
