Perelló, the judge friend of Robles who criticized Lesmes for his sexist language and who will now preside over the CGPJ

The first woman to preside over the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) already has a first and last name.

Catalan, born in 1958, with a progressive profile and member of Judges for Democracy (JJpD), Maria Isabel Perelló Doménech obtained the yes of 16 members of the CGPJ.

Friend of Marguerite RoblesPerelló signed in 2014, precisely with the current Minister of Defense, a letter addressed to Carlos Lesmeswho was then presiding over the Council and in which he was criticized “sexist language” for only referring to his colleagues -with or- in an official communication. The third signatory was also Judge Celsa Picó.

Perelló’s election arrives to the extreme. But it’s coming. It is she who will give a speech this Thursday, representing the judicial career, at the opening ceremony of the Judicial Year, which will be presided over by King Felipe VI. Hence the two blocks of the CGPJ. —the members proposed by the PP and those proposed by the PSOE— have stepped up their efforts to avoid reaching the next day 5 with an interim presidency of the ruling body of judges.

This Tuesday, the CGPJ agreed to propose it as well as the judge of the Supreme Court. Ana Ferrer as candidates; both of a progressive nature. Finally, Perelló was chosen, by 16 votes to four. There was no unanimity, but, as EL ESPAÑOL published, his profile generated more consensus between the two blocs of the Council than that of his rival.

And finally, the two blocs of the ruling body of judges —the progressive wing and the sector considered conservative— managed to reach a consensus around Perelló, who needed at least twelve votes in his favor.

Born in 1958 in Catalonia, She has been a contentious and administrative magistrate of the Supreme Court since 2009.He began his judicial career in 1985 and has held positions at the Court of First Instance and Investigation of Mahón (Menorca), the Provincial Court of Barcelona and the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia.

She is a specialist in contentious and administrative jurisdictions and was a lawyer at the Constitutional Court between 1993 and 2003.

Unlike his rival, Perelló’s name has been added to the list of candidates in recent hours.

Ferrer’s, on the other hand, was not new in the negotiations. Until now, it was the main bet of the progressive sector in recent weeks, after that of the magistrate who had lost weight Pilar Teso.

The members proposed by the PSOE, who insisted that the person who presides over the judiciary be a progressive woman, had already presented Ferrer’s profile to the conservatives, who rejected it, which gave Perelló a certain advantage over his rivalby gathering a greater consensus, which resulted in his election to the presidency of the CGPJ and the Supreme Court with 16 yes votes.
