The presidents of Russia and Mongolia laid wreaths at the monument to Marshal Zhukov in Ulaanbaatar

Today, September 3, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mongolian President Ukhnagiin Khurelsukh took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to the famous Soviet commander Georgy Zhukov, located in Ulaanbaatar.

Military personnel and veterans were also present at the ceremony. Among them was the only surviving witness and veteran of the fighting at Khalkhin Gol. Tserengiin Chimedtseren.

As reported EADaily The day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Mongolia on an official visit to take part in the celebrations dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the joint victory of the Soviet and Mongolian armed forces over the Japanese militarists on the Khalkhin Gol River.

The Georgy Zhukov Memorial Complex in Ulaanbaatar was established to perpetuate the memory of Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov, who played an important role in the struggle of the Mongolian and Soviet peoples against the Japanese aggressors in 1939. For this operation, Zhukov received his first star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, and in 1969 he was awarded the title of Hero of the MPR.

The opening of the museum and monument took place on 18 August 1979, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the victory at Khalkhin Gol.
