This Saturday, October 12, several Madrid metro stations displayed the proclamation “Nothing to Excuse” on the occasion of Hispanic Heritage Day. This is an anonymous campaign that arises in response to attacks launched by the new president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, who did not invite the King of Spain, Felipe VI, to her inauguration even though she asked him to apologize to Mexico.
This proclamation is also the title of a book by the Argentine academic Marcelo Gullo, who echoed this campaign by seeing it through the networks: “Incredible but real, today Nothing to excusethe title of my book, in the Madrid metro. Gullo is a staunch defender of Hispanidad as a sociocultural scaffolding between Spain and Latin America. So much so that his books Country, What America owes Spain either Nothing to excuseare an amendment to the appeal spanish black legenda historical version of Spain which highlights its conquest and its evangelization in the Americas.
Several images also appeared on the networks in which these same posters appeared on the Royal Palace of Madrid, which were not real but were montages made with artificial intelligence. But these messages are visible on the marquees and advertising materials of the Madrid metro, as confirmed by the municipal transport company itself.
Gullo himself emphasized in OKDIARIO a few months ago that “from a historiographical point of view, we have destroyed the black legend, that is to say, it has been pulverized. Another thing is that politically they continue to insist and lie. Apply Goebbels’ policy: lie that there is something left. Well, they will continue to do so. But from a historiographical point of view, the black legend has been shattered. I am proud to have contributed to it with three works. Country, Nothing to excuse And What America owes Spain“.
