A Catalan sovereignist party registered in the Valencian Cortes, at the gates of the regional festival of October 9, a ‘Proposal for the declaration of independence of the Valencian Country’. The popular legislative initiative (ILP) aims to recognize “the right to self-determination” of a territory whose history is “intrinsically linked to that of the others” which “make up the ‘Catalan Countries'”, in reference to the Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.
“Intercomprehension between the different variants of the Catalan language”, he underlines, has contributed “to the cultural and linguistic unity of this shared space”. In addition, he proposes that the Autonomous Parliament recognize “the legitimacy and result of the referendum of October 1, 2017” organized in Catalonia, as well as the “Declaration of Independence of October 27” with the aim of “constitute the Catalan Republic as as “independent” state.
The text states that “the Valencian Country has forged its national identity over the centuries” and places the period of the Kingdom of Valencia as “one of the most brilliant moments in its history”. In this sense, he warns that “moral crisis” that lives with autonomism he condemns it “to extinction”, because “the relationship with Spain is not the result of a pact between equals but of a situation of domination by force”.
Faced with “submission” and “resigning oneself to being a simple Spanish region”, the initiative presented on Thursday proposes to “take advantage of international legality to invoke the right to self-determination”. The entity must collect 10,000 signatureswithin eight months from the acceptance of your writing by the Conseil des Corts, so that the ILP is admitted to debate.
“Attack on the Spanish nation”
In this regard, the president of the Autonomous Chamber, Llanos Masó (Vox), promised this Friday that she would do “everything possible” to prevent a bill that “attacks the unity of the Spanish nation” and demands “the independence of a Valencian country which does not exist”. That is why he will speak with House lawyers about this initiative when the proceedings begin.
“It is a very serious problem that we have already experienced in other autonomous communities and that we have seen where it has led us, to the divide,” he said of a proposal that “gives a kick” both to the Constitution and, “by ricochet”, to the Statute of Autonomy.
