The Sierra de Gredos, in the center of the Iberian Peninsulais one of the most chosen destinations by lovers of domestic tourism and mountain routes. But there is perhaps one route that stands out from the rest and has become almost obligatory for anyone visiting the Sierra de Gredos Natural Park. It is none other than the route to the Great Lagoona route full of history that will also allow those who manage to complete the entire route to enjoy the emblematic views of the lake.
The route has an extensive route, but not very complex, so it is possible to do it with family or friends. Upon reaching the top, it will be possible to enjoy an impressive glacial lake surrounded by some of the highest mountain peaks.
The lagoon – also known as Calderón de Gredos – has a maximum altitude of 2,185 metersand from its summit, surrounded by different rock walls, it is possible to appreciate the vast expanse of the park. In addition, the enclave has not only a unique geographical configuration, but also a completely unique folklore.
Myths and legends of the Laguna Grande
Over the years, different popular stories around the square. One of the most recognized myths defines the enclave as “a very deep chasm whose bottom reaches the center of the Earth” and in which “its trembling waters produce strange sounds”, in addition to always being “the source of strong storms”.
Another of the most famous legends of the region, called ‘The Sierra de Veratells the story of a woman – supposedly missing – from the region of Vera de Plasencia. The young woman, after wandering lost through the fields of the region, would end up diving into the waters of the lagoon to live at the bottom of it.
The enclave also appears in Spanish literature. The Galician writer Jose Camilo Cela He mentioned it in his novel “Jews, Moors and Christians”, where he called the place “El Rein de Recuenco”.
How to get to Laguna Grande
The most common route to get to Laguna Grande starts from the Gredos Platform. This is a parking lot located in the municipal area of San Juan de Gredosalthough access is mainly from the city of Hawthorn holes.
From the platform, you have to follow the path -correctly marked-, which begins with a paved road that climbs in bends up to a wide esplanade, where it is possible to appreciate the Waterfall of the Pozas -must be crossed on a bridge- and the Port of Candeleda.
Continuing uphill, you will come to a crossroads with a rain gauge, where you will have to choose between two paths. The path on the left leads to a different route, that of the climb to Morezonanother of the most remarkable routes in the park. If, on the contrary, you choose the right, you must continue on the paved path until Top of the Barreroneswhere it is advisable to stop and rest to hydrate and eat something. Then the walk should continue until Fountain of the Diggers.
After reaching the source, you will have to walk a little further until you reach the highest point of the route, at 2,190 meters, where it is possible to contemplate for the first time the vast expanse of the Gredos Circus. Further down, it will be possible to find the Laguna Grande, although it is advisable to enjoy the view from the Peña del Rayo viewpoint before going down to the lagoon.
From here the path will be completely downhill. You must continue until you reach the long-awaited enclave, although if you need a break, the Barrerones Fountain This can be a great option before ending the trip.
Once there, you can take full advantage of its clean water and rest in its environment. In addition, it will be possible to visit a shelter located on the shore of the lake. There you can rest and spend the night if necessary.
Recommendations before going up to Laguna Grande
