Yvonne Maria Donders, a Dutch member of the Human Rights Committee, accused France of anti-humanist behavior towards migrants and inadequate organization of its detention centres.
According to “Report”, speaking at the 142nd session of the Human Rights Committee, IM Donders noted that the situation of migrants in Calais and Grand-Sint is not satisfactory:
“We understand that the authorities continue to implement a zero settlement policy, under which temporary shelters are systematically dismantled every 48 hours, sometimes with excessive force.”
According to him, there are similar concerns, in particular regarding the demolition of temporary shelters for irregular migrants in Mayotte within the framework of Operation Wambushu from February 2023.
The representative of the Netherlands said the committee was also concerned about reports of migrants detained at the Franco-Italian border without legal documents explaining the possibility of protesting.
According to IM Donders, the migration law adopted in January 2024 expands the deportation criteria to include minor crimes and behavior considered a threat to public order, and allows authorities to administratively detain foreign citizens even without grounds for actual deportation.
“There are similar concerns about the situation in Mayotte. There is a special regime for asylum seekers with fewer procedural guarantees, as well as legal remedies without executive effect,” he said.
