A fight in a prison in the Mexican state of Michoacán leaves 26 injured and 45 other inmates displaced

At least 26 inmates were injured and 45 others were transferred to different prisons, this is the toll left by a fight at the High Security Penitentiary Center for High Impact Crimes, in the Mexican state of Michoacán, in the west of the country.

A source from the Coordination of the Penitentiary System of Michoacán informed this Thursday Efe that the pitched fight began around 4 p.m. local time (midnight in Spain) in the central courtyard of the penitentiary center, located in the municipality of Charo, adjacent to the city of Morelia, the state capital.

Depending on the version, The fight is said to have lasted about 30 minutes.a time when prisoners used sharp weapons, sticks and other objects that they took from the various workshops in the prison, considered high security.

Security and detention officers had to use tear gas and riot gear to control the fight, while state police deployed a security perimeter outside the prison to prevent any escape attempts.

Paramedics and prison guards treated 26 inmates who suffered various injuries and were transferred to the General Hospital “Doctor Miguel Silva”, located in the complex called Ciudad Salud and located on the border of Charo and Morelia.

In addition, 45 prisoners were transferred to different prisons in Michoacán, in order to avoid new fights or conflicts between prisoners.

The High Security Penitentiary Center for High Impact Crimes is located in a prison complex known as “Mil Cumbres” and is intended for inmates prosecuted for crimes such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, organized crime and homicide.

According to a prison source, Clashes between prisoners over control of illicit activities inside the prisonsuch as selling drugs, alcohol and providing “protection” to prisoners.

Authorities identified among the injured and transferred detainees members of drug trafficking gangs calling themselves the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Los Viagras, Blancos de Troya and Los Caballeros Templarios, among others.
