A group of curators about not a stage in Berlin: “Culture as a non -profit expansion of the horizon”

TAZ: Spoiler, how was your spoiler of the action space created?

Spoiler: We knew each other for many years, friends, partially married. At first, only three of us were controlled by the intermediate use of three months, originally limited in our first room. When the rental agreement was extended, we naturally became six. At the originally accepted time, we stated the principles for us: no one is allowed to release twice, only group exhibitions, everyone can release or submit an application. We kept them to this day. We never had a greater goal to make art possible. With us, exhibitions lasts only on weekends, there is a close time, many programs, short actions to give as many players as possible, and, above all, young artists: quickly give their work. We could also say that we would make a chic, curatorial exhibition, but instead tried to open for everyone. It also creates this not human culture, so we look like a spoiler. We do not want to profile ourselves. It was and applies to this. Create art and the creation of a place where you like to depend.

TAZ: How many artists: have you already exhibited inside?

Spoiler: In the old space, we had more than 66 shows and, therefore, more than 666 artists: inside five years. To date, we have made only one separate exhibition, because we organized a Berlin art prize with an appointed program. Otherwise, these have always been group exhibitions, performances, different pop -up formats. After each show there were more applications.

Spoiler is a platform for actors on free art and cultural scene. An interdisciplinary team from areas of art, cultural education and design has been implementing various artistic campaigns in the city space since June 2017. Since 2019, Joanna Sofia and Matias Richard Gerber, Lorenz Fidel Khukhthausen, Gabriela Capfer, Linus Lutka and Diana Mamman, working in the old in Moabit. After the building was supposed to be demolished last year, the design space found a new house. Another car dealership.

TAZ: Your new place is also in Moabit, suitable for old Pitstopa. Are you integrated on the spot?

Spoiler: Most of our audience is naturally generated from the area. We are always open, but not a classic area. From time to time, we collaborated with local galleries or artistic initiatives. And the rapper Moabiter Apsilon performed with us. Moabit always came with us.

TAZ: Did politics come too?

Spoiler: Joe Chialo was announced because he probably did not know what the project hall was. He probably does not know until today. Its employees: inside the Senate I wanted to make a tour with him, initiated by the Tropez project. But this was canceled in a short time. Local politicians: never went inside. But a good employee from the Senate Department was a guest at our opening in a new place.

TAZ: How do you finance? Do you have a reduction in the cultural budget?

Spoiler: The fact that financing was halved is already. Financing is more like gaps or provides something new for us, but we would somehow do this without doing this. We received structural advance from the Senate of Berlin for the first time in 2024 and 2025. Now it can be lowered. Otherwise, there were only funds based on projects. And initially now the abolished price of the project space. Free scene financing is simply less. But the spoiler is still all in any case, the complete plus is minus zero, which largely coincides with donations. Usually we cannot pay any fees and did not pay ourselves for many years. A spoiler is possible only because we all have other jobs. This is a kind of volunteering, a passionate project that did not end only because there is no more money or place. Then it should be different. We still find this spirit important for culture. We must get this. And this does not mean that he does not need financing. The established working institutions, in particular, depend on this. The off-scenes have always been based on a self-edition, and, therefore, retains final freedom. We would never get our most wild things.

TAZ: What kind of wild things?

Spoiler: The artist Lena-Mari Emrich lit in the room with the car, so let the tires go crazy until they dissolve and fill the whole room with blue fog. The artist flooded the earth with fried fat. Something like that. You do not write an application for financing for this. You just do it.

SELLERIE WEEKEND

SELLERIE WEEKEND, initiated by Spoiler, takes place parallel to the weekend gallery in more than 100 places in Berlin from May 2 to 4, 2025.

TAZ: The spoiler is also an action movie. Do you see yourself in the tradition of actions?

Spoiler: Perhaps modern interpretations. We chose the name because we did not want to reduce it to the “exhibition space”. The action takes place. The place is indicated, nothing more. We are rather a platform for everything that can be there than the classic hall of the project.

TAZ: Now with the weekend of celery you are forming another platform for the whole scene.

Spoiler: At first it was wit, and then we did it easily: the OFF program assembled during the weekend gallery, and called it that. Unlike the weekend of the gallery, no one should pay money with us to participate, and nothing is chosen. Everyone with a permanent place or concept and without commercial interests can participate.

TAZ: It really sounds like a program that should be organized or supported by the Senate, as a week of art.

Spoiler: Many who choose cultural programs and awards in Berlin have nothing to do, and they no longer bother to find out the scene. It helps that we travel a lot on stage, go to discoveries and talk a lot to people. No one else performs work to create a distributor with countless spaces, so we must do this on a voluntary basis. We are always surprised at the weekend of sellers, how many project rooms are in each area.

TAZ: Has this scene changed in recent years?

Spoiler: There may be a professionalization of rooms. In the past, most of the initiatives of the artists were: intermediate use initiated inside, while there are currently more permanent places with a specific profile. On the Strasse Leipziger there are very different rooms in the immediate vicinity. The rooms are more seriously related to themselves, they understood how important they were.

TAZ: According to rumors, Berlin will soon become one: n new: n cultural senator: in stock. What will be your advice about the continuity of Chialo?

Spoiler: Mix yourself among people. Also go to exhibitions in private. Financing concepts, some of which are outside of reality. If the cultural scene should diversify, structures should also do this. The only capital in the city is culture. Joe Chialo used this only as an ammunition to go through a political and conservative line. People do not come to Berlin from the state opera, but because they can accidentally go to the exhibition and because there is a performance. Society needs culture as an expansion of a non -profit horizon.

TAZ: Where is the best way to expand your horizon for the coming weekend in celery?

Spoiler: It is best to open a card on the site and see what you like or is nearby. Something happens throughout the city. In the campaign’s house in Neuköll/Britz there will be edible art, and then dj tape on Friday. In new fears in Kroyzberg there is also an exhibition and performance with a large group and a performance throughout the day. Insola Berlin is a floating project hall in Rummelsburger Bucht, of course, there is a trip. But it is best to just go somewhere by the remarkable fork, where you have never been.
