The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia should meet with US President Donald Trump for a peaceful summit in Washington on Thursday and Friday, which can contribute to a long -awaited peaceful deal between the two countries.
After almost four decades of the bitter conflict, Baku and Grevan could ultimately compromise with the world in the region and, above all, leave Moscow, and two former Soviet countries in the south of the Caucasus leave Russia.
The presence of a meeting in the White House, together with the US President, will send a strong message to Moscow about the obligations of the two countries to find a decision between them, but also redirect their foreign policy to the West.
It will also strengthen Trump’s wider attempt to confirm himself and the United States as an important factor in resolving global conflicts.
The time of the White House meeting will undoubtedly violate Moscow: on the day when Trump appoints the Kremlin to agree on a ceasefire, two of the former narrow allies of Russia will be in Washington, possibly signing their own historical agreement.
The corridor of Zangzura remains the key
On July 10, Azerbaijani President Ilhama Aliyev and Prime Minister Armenia Nikol Passin met at Abu Dabi for the first official bilateral meeting. The purpose of the leaders was to complete the details of the peace treaty between the two countries and form the future nearby after almost four decades of the conflict.
The most important problem on the agenda of peaceful negotiations is the corridor of Zanguezur – the proposed transport route designed to connect the mainland of Azerbaijan with its enclave, bordering the ally of Baku through the territory of Armenian.
For Azerbaijan, the corridor offers a direct land unit with a Nahsivan, reinforces ties with Turkey and consolidates after receiving profit through infrastructure diplomacy.
This will strengthen the position of Azerbaijan as a critical center of transport and logistics around the world. But Azerbaijan did not want to participate in some third side and would prefer to be under the control of Baku without the participation of the United States, Europe or Russia.
For Herwan, the corridor of Zanguezur will provide the opportunity to further integrate into wider commercial networks, differentiate his problem economy and attract foreign investments. From a geopolitical point of view, this will also help Armenia smooth out his relations with his neighbors.
But Herwan fears that he can threaten the Armenian rule, and insists that any route will remain under the control of the Armenians, fearing that the actual status of the “corridor” can mean the tradition of power.
The corridor of the 43 -kilometer through the province of Armenia in Sayunik is of strategic importance not only for Azerbaijan and Armenia. This will have an influence and influence on the geopolitical situation throughout the region and beyond.
And at that moment the United States is trying to intervene.
The interests of Washington and the contrast of the Moscow Teruran
On Wednesday, the State Armenian Service said that the White House meeting was aimed at “contributing to the world, prosperity and economic cooperation in the region.”
Washington really has financial interests in the South Caucasus.
A few weeks ago, the United States proposed managing the Zanguezur corridor, which creates a continuous ground route that facilitates the flow of goods and passengers between Azerbaijan, Turkey and, finally, Europe and Asia.
Ankara also considers the corridor as an important connection in his ambitions to become an important energy and commercial center. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented on the importance of the corridor for journalists earlier in July.
But the idea caused anger and a strong reaction to Russia and Iran. For Moscow and Tehran, the US participation would threaten to control the trade of the North-South through the South Caucasus.
Iran could lose a lever of pressure in northern trade, since he would deprive of access to land to the South Caucasus through Armenia.
In addition, the corridor can expand the influence of the Turkish language and, now, bring us a direct presence on the border of Iran.
For the Kremlin, this will mean that he will lose the last parts of his influence in the area, which was once his stronghold.
Former Moscow allies
While Moscow is locked in Ukraine, it gradually loses its influence on its stronghold, which has been holding for decades in the region of the South Caucasus.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan restored full control over the Karabakh region after the lightning of a military campaign after a decade of conflict with Armenia, in which the Kremlin was a central factor.
Almost two years later, Grevan and Baku wrote a story from Russia, agreeing to the text of a peaceful transaction and normalizing their relationship after a bloody conflict, which until recently had no visible ending.
Moscow is trying to restore cooperation with Baku and Grevan, offering “mediation” and launching a misinformation campaign against Herwan.
Russia’s efforts to restore its connections with Baku were completely destroyed when in Kazakhstan in Kazakhstan crashed Azerbaijani aircraft, killing 38 out of 67 passengers.
How exclusively euronews are carried out, polls The incident showed that the flight of Azerbaijan 8243 was a fire from Russian air defense over Russia and became uncontrolled electronic wars.
Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev recently announced that his country was preparing to file trials in international courts against Russia from the crash of Azerbaijan airlines.
Referring to the investigation of the Boeing case at the Malaysian airline, which was shot down by Russian fighters within the framework of the occupied Russian region Donetsk, Ukraine, Aliyev said that Baku was ready to wait as necessary.
“We are ready to wait 10 years, but justice should win. And, unfortunately, the situation that is currently under consideration does not contribute to the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Azerbaijan, ”he explained.
Last month, Azerbaijan and Russia were involved in another rare escalation. Baku was arrested by the executive director and editor -in the Russian information agency Sputnik after Moscow’s raids at the Azerbaijani community of Ekaterinburg.
Two people died during the raid of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), and another 50 were arrested.
While distance from Russia paved the way for Armenia and Azerbaijan to put an end to the decades of the conflict, it also created a certain gap in the region, especially on the most important issues where Baku and Grevan can take more time and more time.
And this is an opportunity for other countries and leaders not only to facilitate the diplomatic compromise, but also for financial benefits.
