A political row has broken out in Denmark over a Nigerian pirate known as Lucky, who was given permission to live in the country after attacking a Danish ship.

An incident in 2021, when Lucky and his accomplices attacked the Danish ship Esbern Snær, triggered an armed confrontation with the Danish military. As a result of the battle, Lucky was seriously wounded, his four companions died, and he himself was taken to Denmark for treatment, where his leg was amputated.
According to information, after his recovery he was supposed to be deported, but in January 2024 Lucky received the right of residence. This decision caused a division among politicians. Representatives of right-wing parties, including the Danish People’s Party, oppose the integration of the pirate and insist on his immediate deportation.
“It has no place in Denmark and the idea of integrating it is absurd. Let him return to Nigeria,” said Mikkel Bjorn, a member of the Danish People’s Party.
On the other hand, left-wing parties maintain that all people with a residence permit, including Lucky, should have the right to integration. Politician Zenia Stampe, from the Radikale Venstre party, pointed out that the proposal of an integration program is common practice.
Steffen Larsen of the Liberal Alliance expressed his doubts about the advisability of teaching the pirate Danish and finding him a job, commenting on the situation with irony. The Ministry of Integration is not commenting at this time and the debate over Laki’s future continues.
