a magical path by the sea

With the arrival of summer, our energy and productivity increase. We have more hours of sunshine per day, which also indirectly influences our mood, holidays are approaching and the temperature on the street invites us to make more elaborate plans or even multi-day getaways to discover new places.

Although there are unique and fascinating places around the world, Spain also has a lot to offer geographically. Beaches, roads and coves that show us that Heaven may be closer than we think, and it also makes movement easier.

Among these corners we find Cala Granadella, one of the best kept secrets of Jávea. With only 160 meters in length, it has everything to have been named on several occasions as the most beautiful beach in Spain, including: a “secret” route that runs along the sea: the road to Granadella Castle.

The route to Granadella Castle

The Granadella Castle route is one of the lesser-known activities to do near the beach. Of medium difficulty, it is a circular route of approximately 4.5 kilometers with a height difference of 300 meters. The estimated time to complete the route varies between two and three hours, depending on the pace and the breaks we want to take.

The starting point is the Cala Granadella car park, where the ideal is to arrive as early as possible, not only to find a place, but also to avoid suffering from the high temperatures. From there, We have to follow a paved track that is behind the cove. A sign marks the start of the trail which deviates to the left along a dirt road.

The route begins with an initial climb along a paved track that gives access to the houses in the area. As you move forward, the path becomes a narrower and more natural path, but always accompanied by spectacular views, especially of Cala Granadella and the coast of Jávea.

This narrowing is a warning that one of the most technical sections of the route is approaching, the passage of chains, which crosses a rocky and steep area. Even though its name seems complicated, it is not a major challenge; However, it is always recommended to take extreme precautions and wear appropriate footwear.

Once we have crossed this pass, we will reach the ruins of the castle of Granadella, a 18th century fortification Built to defend the coast against attacks by Barbary pirates. Although now in ruins, the castle offers a fascinating window into the military history of the region.

From its remains, one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding cliffs, making this site a highlight of the hiking trail, next to the Mirador de Levante, which is a few meters further.

This viewpoint offers panoramic views of the coastline of Benitatxell and is the place from which we can enjoy impressive views of the coastline as well as the natural landscape. It has adequate spaces for resting, Hydrate yourself and get ready to return to Cala Granadella, where we can swim in some of the most beautiful crystal clear waters in Spain.
