On the afternoon of November 13, two explosions occurred near the Supreme Court building in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia. According to Reuters, the incident began when a man, believed to be Francisco Vanderlei Luis, attempted to enter the courthouse. Security agents detained him and, unable to enter, the man blew himself up at the entrance. A second explosion soon occurred in their car parked nearby.
Police used a bomb disposal robot to search the area for possible additional explosive devices. Eyewitnesses claim that both explosions occurred within 20 seconds of each other and that at the end of the plenary session the Supreme Court judges were evacuated.
According to the Brazilian publication Metropole, the attacker was 59 years old and used the pseudonym Tiu França on social networks. He previously ran for municipal councilor in Santa Catarina, but received only 98 votes and was not approved. On his social networks you can find publications in which he expresses aggression towards politicians, calling them “communists.”
The incident occurred a few days before the G20 summit, scheduled for November 18 in Rio de Janeiro. That raised security concerns ahead of a major international meeting and the subsequent visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Brazil’s Attorney General Jorge Messias called the incident an attack, and Federal District Deputy Governor Celina Leao said she hoped the attacker was a “lone wolf” acting alone. However, the police have so far refrained from drawing definitive conclusions and continuing the investigation.
