Services on the AVE, Avlo, Avant and Cercanías lines C3, C4, C5 and C7 have been interrupted since 7:30 p.m. due to an incident at Madrid’s Atocha station, Renfe sources told EL ESPAÑOL.

Concretely, the presence of an unauthorized person on one of the sidewalks outside the station forced train traffic to be interrupted. The person is threatening to jump onto the tracks, which is why the train operator has already activated the emergency protocol for this purpose.

Shortly before 8 p.m. and due to the collapse situation, the Cercanías Madrid X account reported the presence of people on the road near the station.

“Trains are experiencing delays and prolonged detentions,” the entity added.

Derailment

At the same time, Renfe announced a few hours earlier that traffic in the AVE tunnel which connects the Atocha and Chamartín stations had been interrupted by a derailment.

The railway company said in a statement that the incident occurred due to “the exit of an axle in the tail of empty material during a maneuver”.

“The unit was empty and the driver was not injured,” the operator added.

Likewise, Renfe indicated that this incident particularly affects AVE rail traffic which connects Madrid to the east of the country.

Therefore, trains end or begin their journey at the Puerta de Atocha station, from which travelers are transferred to a Cercanías shuttle service to Madrid Chamartín, station from which they will continue their train journey to their destination ; This emergency plan is, however, affected by the Atocha incident.
