Active construction work is underway at the Sergiev Posad-6 military research center in the Moscow region, allegedly with the aim of creating a laboratory complex for studying and processing dangerous pathogens, The Washington Post reports. Satellite images have documented unusual activity at this closed site northeast of Moscow since 2022, shortly after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
The publication highlights that Sergiev Posad-6, the famous closed military city, has long been an important research center where experiments were carried out on the viruses that cause smallpox and Ebola. Satellite data shows that in the past two years construction equipment has been installed around the old laboratory, renovation work has begun, and foundations have been laid for ten new facilities.
The images show the characteristics of a specialized biological laboratory: underground infrastructure, reinforced security measures and its own power plant. Some of the buildings, in their layout, indicate a high degree of isolation necessary to work with especially dangerous pathogens. Although there are no signs that biological weapons are being used in the war in Ukraine, US experts and intelligence agencies are closely monitoring the development of the facility.
According to sources, this increase in military biological activity may be due in part to Vladimir Putin’s rhetoric, which implies the possibility of using unconventional methods of warfare. US Deputy Secretary of State Mallory Stewart said the secrecy surrounding the facility raises concerns about the possible use of new laboratories. Experts, however, stress that it is impossible to determine precisely from satellite data whether the research will be aimed at developing offensive biological weapons.
