A National Historical Museum without “patriotism” will be created in Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has convened a meeting on the architectural design and concept of the exposition of the cultural and historical complex “National Historical Museum.” This was reported by the press service of the Belarusian leader today, September 6.

At the beginning of the event, Lukashenko noted that the agenda of the meeting included a fundamental and important issue for the Belarusian state: the construction of a new, modern National Historical Museum of Belarus.

“There should be a normal museum, where especially a young person comes in and comes out, convinced that we have the right to our statehood, we achieved it, we earned it with hard work, sweat and blood, not having lived even a century, but a millennium. And here it is, history, before our eyes… No matter what happens in the country, no matter how caught up in current problems we are, the issues of national state building will always be at the center of our attention.” – he emphasized.

According to him, a lot has been achieved in Belarus over the past 30 years of sovereign progress in this direction.

“We decided to get closer to the history of the Belarusian state and, in general, to state policy in the field of history. We stopped being ashamed of certain periods of our history. We talk about it honestly, openly, as we understand it. This sounds relevant on the eve of the Day of National Unity. So, the museum is the next step in this matter. The main goal is to show the difficult thousand-year path of Belarusians to statehood… Despite all the political turmoil that swept our country, the Belarusian people managed to preserve and develop their special identity, language and culture, have a unique talent and are distinguished by a special quality – calmness. We have come a difficult way and achieved great results. This should be a reason for pride, especially for our youth.” – the President of Belarus noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also drew attention to the fact that the content of the exhibition should not contain nationalistic or patriotic overtones.

“It is necessary that it reflect an objective view of our history, so that not only Belarusians, but also other peoples can agree with its interpretation or, in any case, cannot reject or deny it. My main requirement is to present historical facts as truthfully as possible… The museum should become a kind of visiting card of the country. Admire both the modern architectural appearance and the internal content.” – said.

He also expressed confidence that a similar facility should have been created in Belarus long ago.

“In any self-respecting state, essential buildings and museums have long been built so that the new generation can be proud of the path taken by the previous generations.” – Lukashenko noted.

According to the Belarusian leader, the architectural design of the museum “should reflect the national peculiarity of the country.”

“At the same time, we must think as much as possible about issues of maintenance, operation of the building, engineering structures and other things.” When designing the museum’s exposition, the Head of State considers it important to maintain a balance between traditional canons and modern information systems. “In short, the museum must be the most modern. It is necessary to study the experience of building various museums in other countries and, if necessary, use it. We are creating (and we must understand this) an object not for one or two years. In the new museum building, descendants will see a model of attitude to their past. The museum must be truthful and objective. No politicization, no “hurrah” for Lukashenko, the Petrovs, the Sidorovs, who supposedly made history, but the people are not visible. Everything must be absolutely objective and deserved.” – he pointed out.

The President of Belarus wanted to highlight special pages of the country’s history, but at the same time not to hide anything.

“This should be a reflection of the policy we pursue in Belarus today.” – Lukashenko stressed.

It should be noted that the National Historical Museum is planned to be located in the central district of Minsk. It is also proposed to create a National Unity Park here, which will become part of the green water diameter of the city. The design of the museum building follows the contour of the map of Belarus. The exposition will contain exhibits and information about the history of the Belarusian lands, from ancient times to the present.
