The use of drones is very popular in Spain, as they are a valuable tool for recording images and videos from an aerial perspective. Machines which, for some time, have also become valuable weapons in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia since February 24, 2022. And although they are used by both sides, Vladimir Putin’s forces have gone even further by modifying kamikaze drones with SpaceX Starlink antennas and, now, create new ones controlled by optical fiber.

During the ongoing operations in eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian soldiers managed to discover other military secrets of Russia: And the forces of the country presided over by Volodymyr Zelensky have captured a new Russian drone controlled by fiber optics, according to radio technology specialist Serhiy Beskrestnov, also known as Serhiy Flash, in a publication on the social network Facebook; and which is taken up by the specialized media Defense Blog.

Beskrestnov shared an image of the said drone on his profile on the Meta social network, in which this specialist took the opportunity to thank the Ukrainian troops for revealing that the drone had managed to travel a distance of 9 kilometers before being captured. “It’s now a trophy. He covered 9 kilometers. And this is not Kursk, but the East“, wrote Beskrestnov, indicating that the incident occurred during fighting in eastern Ukraine.

This new drone has been identified as a “Vandal” model of FPV, i.e. first person view, and represents a sophisticated piece of Russian technology. This new machine stands out mainly for its stable image quality and signal retention, even in situations where combat is intense. They also provide excellent image quality and excellent flight stability, I maintain the signal until the last second.

However, and as reported by the same media, despite its impressive capabilities, the range of the drone is totally limited by the length of the fiber optic cable. And this limits its flight distance and maneuverability. Nevertheless, one of the main advantages of “Vandal” is its resistance to electronic warfare interference; be able to operate effectively in environments where other drones might become useless.

Unlike traditional drones, which are based on radio frequency signals and vulnerable to interference, the “Vandal” fiber optic control system allows be immune to traditional electronic warfare measures. This characteristic therefore makes it an increasingly valuable weapon on the battlefield for Russian forces. A drone that first appeared during the conflicts in the Kursk region.
