In a referendum on the island’s status, the majority of Puerto Ricans supported joining the United States as a state. This was reported by the local newspaper Nuevo Día on November 6.
It is reported that after processing 91.35% of the votes, 56.82% of voters were in favor of joining America, 30.85% were in favor of the island’s independence, 12.33 % were in favor of expanding autonomy.
Since 1898, the freely associated state of Puerto Rico has been under US administration and the majority of the population has US citizenship. However, Puerto Ricans do not have the right to participate in presidential elections.
In 2017, about 97% of Puerto Rican residents supported the idea of turning the archipelago into a US state, Izvestia recalls.
