A Podemos deputy dresses as a tailcoat collector to demand that López Miras pay the rent bonus for young people

The deputy of the Regional Assembly of Podemos Víctor Egio accompanied this morning a group of young people from the Rebeldía collective affected by the non-payment of the Youth Rental Bonus, who burst into the presentation of the Reside Murcia housing fair. Some of these young people have been waiting for two years for additional help due to delays from the Murcia Ministry of Development.

Egio recalled that, of the more than nine million granted by the Spanish government, the Regional Executive “did not even pay 50% and refused two requests out of three.” This means that “a significant part of the aid granted by the central government will have to be returned”.

Young activists launched proclamations against real estate speculation during this event which brings together the most important developers in the Region. Shouting “Speculators!” » and “It’s not a business, it’s a right!” They interrupted the intervention of the Murcian Minister of Public Works, Jorge García Montoro. They were then deported. Egio, who appeared in the room dressed in a tailcoat to demand payment for aid, denounced the “excessive use of force” by the event’s security against “certain young people who were only demanding their rights” .

On the other hand, the purple spokesperson assured that “this aid will not solve the problem, but it is a relief for some young people.” According to Egio, “what is needed is to build social housing and limit rent prices”, strategies that Podemos has been calling for for some time.

In this sense, the purple formation submitted to the Regional Assembly a motion which includes the payment of the rent bonus for young people with interest on late payment, the publication of a calendar with the terms of payment, favoring the construction of housing social on the public domain, thus avoiding that these houses could be abolished or set a social rent, a figure which in the Region “still does not benefit from legal protection”.

Promotion makes Egio’s actions ugly

“It is regrettable that a regional deputy dedicates himself to destroying an event organized by an organization,” denounced the Ministry of Development and Infrastructure of the Region of Murcia. The Community rejected Egio’s allegations. They assured that the Executive granted “all aid for requests that meet the requirements and amount to nine million euros, and paid all those that were justified as totaling more than 4.5 million euros”: “As the monthly rent payment amounts are justified, the subsidies are paid. In other words, aid cannot be paid for months that have not yet been paid by tenants, as this is established in the state regulations of these subsidies,” they explained.

“If the rest of the young candidates cannot benefit from this aid, it is because they do not meet the conditions imposed solely and exclusively by the socialist government. Only 3.65 out of ten of the applications submitted meet the requirements of the call designed unilaterally by the ministry,” they argued.
