A prisoner convicted of murder is expelled from the kitchen of the Ponent prison (Lleida)

The Ministry of Justice has preventively expelled a prisoner convicted of homicide from the kitchen of the Ponent penitentiary center (Lleida), as departmental sources explained to Europa Press.

The same sources specified that in addition to eliminating it, “the system is being reviewed to strengthen security measures as much as possible” in Catalan prisons, as well as the criteria that have been followed until now when assigning prisoners to the workshops of the Center for Initiatives for Reintegration (CIRE).

The ministry took this measure after ‘El Segre’ announced this Wednesday that the prisoner, removed from the kitchen of the Ponent prison after the murder in March of Núria López, the cook of Mas d’Enric (Tarragona), would return to her position on August 28, despite the fact that a Man sentenced to 15 years in prison for stabbing a person to death in Barcelona in 2018.

After learning of this news, the CSIF union declared to the management of the center in a press release in which it recognizes that, even if “zero risk does not exist in a prison environment”, its the responsibility is to minimize it.

In the document consulted by Europa Press, they recall that prisoners serving sentences for blood crimes, with a history of criminal or prison violence or suffering from psychiatric pathologies They should not have access to potentially risky destinationslike a prison kitchen.

Furthermore, in this specific case, the union emphasizes similarities between the profile of the prisoner removed from the kitchen of the Ponent prison and the one who murdered Núria López: “Both were convicted of murder, committed crimes, at some point rejected their treatment program and were expelled from other destinations.”

The CSIF also assured that the CIRE “prioritizes its commercial interests over the rehabilitation and reintegration criteria for which it was created” with the aim, according to the union, of granting more permits to prisoners and maintains that it is based on the evaluation of the RisCanvi tool, which considers prisoners with this profile as at low risk of violence, clear proof of its ineffectiveness.
