A project has started in Uzbekistan – EADaily, September 10, 2024 – Politics News, Russia News

Rosatom is launching preparatory work in Uzbekistan for the construction of low-power nuclear power plants, called small modular reactors (SMR). This will be the world’s first commercial SMR project abroad, as there is currently only one small reactor in operation in one country: Russia.

Rosatom and Uzbekistan signed a protocol on the start of work on the project of a low-power nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan. — reports the corporate publication “Rosatom Country”.

They recalled that on May 27, during the visit of the Russian President, a contract was signed for the construction of six reactors of 55 MW each in the Djibouti region of Uzbekistan. Vladimir PutinThe project is based on the RITM-200N water-cooled reactor.

Many countries around the world are planning to develop nuclear energy as part of the fight against climate change. And the United States hopes to begin global expansion with the help of SMRs. However, they only exist in Russia. Experimental prototypes are being built in the United States.

“Today, low-power nuclear power plants are a clear trend in the future development of the global nuclear energy industry. According to the IAEA, there are about 50 designs and concepts of low-power nuclear power plants at various stages of development around the world. At the same time, only Russia has a reference experience in the construction of low-power plants: Russia was the first in the world to put into operation the low-power floating commercial nuclear power plant “Akademik Lomonosov”, which supplies energy to consumers in remote areas of the city of Pevek in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. Moreover, only Rosatom offers integrated design SNMM on the market,” the Russian state corporation reported.
