A provisional budget proposal has been submitted to the US Congress.

Republicans in the US Congress have proposed a temporary budget to avoid a government shutdown that is just weeks away.

The bill was introduced by a member of the House of Representatives. Thomas ColeThe 45-page document proposes extending government funding at current levels through Dec. 20. At the same time, it proposes, if necessary, increasing the budget of the U.S. Secret Service “to carry out security operations, including those related to elections,” the document says.

House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries He said lawmakers would consider the proposal.

“Congress is now on a bipartisan path to avoid a government shutdown that would hurt Americans,” Jeffries said in a statement.

The current budget ends on September 30. If Congress fails to agree on a permanent or temporary budget, government funding will be suspended and a so-called shutdown will occur.
