A referendum has begun in Kazakhstan on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country.

In Kazakhstan, voting on the referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country began on Sunday, RIA Novosti reports.

More than 12 million citizens are expected to vote at 10,325 polling stations. Kazakhs will have to answer one question: “Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?”

Public order during the organization and celebration of the referendum will be guaranteed by 33,000 police officers, of which 18,000 will be at the polling stations. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan reported that as of October 2, the personnel of the internal affairs bodies were transferred to an improved version of the service.

Voting in Kazakhstan will last until 8:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Moscow time).

Citizens living abroad will also be able to express their position. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan reported that 74 polling stations will be opened in 59 countries, in particular in Russia, voting will be possible in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Astrakhan and Omsk.

The results of the vote will be published in the media from October 7 to 12.
