a well that drives you crazy

qWhat is your favorite dish? What item do you want to bring? These two questions are asked of each volunteer, a lost soul seeking atonement, before joining the Pit (of which he knows nothing). A concrete prison tower with 333 cells, each occupied by two inmates and crossed in the center by a seemingly bottomless pit. It is through this enormous hole that each day a platform full of food descends, decreasing from level to level. In this vertical hell, prisoners change floors randomly every month, with the first levels being able to gorge themselves as much as they want, even if that means starving the lower cells where they will inevitably end up also breaking the slab (or being eaten). by his fellow prisoner).

This, in short, is the story of the platform, Spanish film produced by Netflix and directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, released in 2019 (83 million views). An allegory of capitalism, where uncertainty is organized by giving the oppressed the hope that one day they will be able to access privileges. This somewhat crude presentation of the class struggle offers some glimpses, such as the Cube either Snow Punch. With a note of hope at the end through this somewhat Christ-like message: let us save innocence (obviously embodied by a child) and we will achieve redemption in this violent and corrupt world.

We could have left it there, but, encouraged by the success of the first installment, Netflix released a sequel, Platform 2, broadcast since October 4 and reached first place in fifty-six countries in the space of one weekend. And there, daddies! The fans are disappointed but, above all, nobody understands anything anymore.

The film, much bloodier than the previous one (sensitive souls and vegetarians abstain), not only does it not provide answers about the leaders of the Well and the purpose of its creation, but it adds a series of questions about its operation. The rules have changed after a “solidarity revolution”, it is now mandatory to share food and each person must eat only the dish they chose when entering. Those who break the law are maimed or killed by a small group of prisoners led by a somewhat tyrannical messiah of sorts called the Master.

Blurred tracks

Faced with the loyalists, those who resist this system within the system, called barbarians, will end up rebelling. If we add to this some children playing in a pyramid under the Well, a character presumed dead in the first part, a Goya painting and an enigmatic-esoteric ending, we will better understand why the second occurrence that appears on Google is: “ Platform 2, explanation.”
